National Youth Day 2013:
  Sunday 12th January 2013


Government of India has declared January 12th National Youth Day in 1984. Today marks the birthday of the great Indian philosopher, Swami Vivekananda, whose teachings are the greatest asset philosophical countries. The motto of the Youth Day statement on the date of birth of this philosophical guru was motivating and inculcating these pious ideals for generations to come.

According to the citation of the Government of India's Communication, "it was felt that the philosophy of Swami ji and the ideals for which he lived and worked could be a great source of inspiration for the Indian youth."

Celebration

National Youth Day is observed with great devotion to Swami Vivekananda at the headquarters of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission centers and their branches.

Members of organizations observe anniversary of Swami Vivekananda in different ways. Anniversary celebrations of Swami, according to Hindu calendar typical follow Hindu way of celebrations.

This includes mangalarati, homa (special worship of fire), meditation, devotional songs, religious discourses and sandhyarti

Many activities are planned for the day including various processions, speeches, recitations, music, conventions, seminars, youth yogasana presentation, competitions essay writing and sports.

The National Youth Day is also observed in almost all educational institutions of the country with great enthusiasm.

Anniversary of Vivekananda according to Indian Almanac (Vishuddha Siddhanta Almanac) is on Saptami tithi Pausha Krishna, which falls on different dates in the English calendar every year. Thus, as reported by the Indian government, the anniversary of Vivekananda is celebrated every year on January 12th as National Youth Day as the date is fixed for each year according to the Gregorian calenda.
